When Tina Fey got bored of her head writer position at SNL; she decided to pitch the draft she had for the show we now know as 30 Rock. After much writing and rewriting; the show was finally given the green light. 30 Rock first aired in October of 2006 and as of January 2010 has aired 69 episodes. The concept for the show came from Tina's experience in the entertainment business and as a result the show has been widely accepted and has an ever growing audience in the United States. 30 Rock can be compared in a lot of ways to Saturday Night Live (SNL) because Tina brought a lot of the SNL spirit with her.
The show centers on the lives of seven main characters: Liz Lemon, Tracy Jordan, Jenna Maroney, Kenney Parcell, Pete Hornberger, Frank Rossitano, and Jack Donaghy. In the show these characters all work for a fictional live sketch comedy series which is said to air on
NBC, and they always seem to have difficulty keeping their relationships professional and getting the fictional show to run correctly. Most of the characters for this show were written with persons in mind, for example Liz is played by Tina; Tina made the show, wrote a character for herself, and then casted herself for the part as she was in charge of casting persons for the roles also. This is pretty cool because a lot of the situations the characters find themselves in are situations that the writers and actors have faced before. Of course these situations are twisted and turned into hilarious ones with the magic of comedy.
30 Rock is shot on industry standard 35mm film and most of the music has a Jazz feel to it, this is mainly because Tina's husband (a jazz musician) composed the title music and a lot of the scores featured throughout the series are built off of it. In 2009, 30 Rock was nominated for a total of 22 Emmys which is the record breaking number for any comedy series.
I think 30 Rock is a pretty decent program; their comedy is not "over the top" but it is still great. This is one of the programs you should watch whenever you have spare time; it's not on my must watch list – hardly any program is- but it has earned its 6 million viewers and tons of awards. So if you ever have time; go check out 30 Rock on
NBC.
