Born in Los Angeles, David Michael Gregory is a multitalented journalist who host, moderates and broadcasts several American television programs. He was born of a father who had a career as a theatre producer and a mother who worked as an account manager in August 24, 1970. David was raised in a Jewish family.
After high school, David joined American University in and graduated in 1992. It is during his time at the University that he started his work in journalism taking up a position in the campus television. He graduated in 1992 and his work at the university was recognized and he was appointed at the Dean's Advisory Council.
At the early age of only 18, he worked a reporter in Tucson, Arizona and later for KCRA-TV in Sacramento. Currently he is the co-anchor of Weekend today and also hosts the Today show since 2005. He has previously hosted popular shows like News Chat, Crosstalk at
NBC and the Newsfront with
MSNBC.
David and the former US president George W. Bush had a personal close relationship and when Gregory was assigned by
NBC Bush threw a party on David's 30th birthday. Immediately after Bush was elected in, Gregory was appointed as the White House correspondent for
NBC. He held this position until 2008.
In the same year, he was appointed as a moderator Meet the Press replacing Tom Brokaw. Later in 2008, due to internal administration wrangles at
MSNBC, David was appointed as an anchor during the presidential debates and political coverage. He further proceeded to cover the whole elections with a team of fellow and experienced journalists.
During his time as a reporter and all through his career, Gregory's interaction with Bush's administration and specifically the Press secretaries has been a controversial issues and has always gathered a lot of media attention. He has gathered a of criticism too from that, and some critics have named his as a biased reporter.
In December 2006 during a media meeting Gregory posted a question on the report on Iraq which the Press secretary refused to answer adding that it was framed in a partisan manner. Criticism mounted on Fox news and word went around that their coverage was taking a partisan attitude towards the Bush administration.
In the year 2009, The Daily Beast columnist Ana Marie Cox stated that President Barack Obama still has not discovered "this administration's David Gregory". She used Gregory as a metaphor for a White House foil, and she described this as a figure that could be interpreted as either "tough, news-oriented, and no-nonsense or showy, superficial, and self-indulgent".
While covering the Oklahoma city bombing, David met Beth Wilkinson who was the former federal prosecutor and former Fannie Mae Executive vice president and general counsel and corporate secretary. At that time, David was working as a reporter on the case while Beth was the prosecutor. They got to know each other and David Gregory was married to Beth Wilkinson in 2000 whom she met while on duty as a reported in Oklahoma. They have three children.
