His mother was also a postal worker and together she and his father raised him and his two sisters. After leaving high school Dennis attended Southern Illinois University, his future was looking very bright but just after graduation he was drafted into the military to serve in the Vietnam War. In the army he served with a reconnaissance unit for 11 month and after he was dismissed from the army he suffered from depression for months to come.

After serving his country Dennis took the advice of a friend and headed to Los Angeles to look for work in the film industry. After a few short years he finally landed his first big role on a television show. Dennis was selected to appear in thirteen episodes of Chicago Story and after this show there was no turning back for his TV career. He was mainly given roles as an officer of the law; usually a police man After scoring prominent roles in movies like Die Hard 2 Dennis finally landed his signature role as Det. Andy Sipowicz in NYPD Blue; for 261 episodes Dennis gave life to this character. While he was working on NYPD Blue he also got the chance to star in the movie "City of Angles" as Nathaniel Messinger. Dennis's years of hard work have paid off. Dennis's career has lasted well over 27 years and if he ever decides to return to acting I am sure he will be accepted very well. If you have not seen any of the movies or TV shows he has played in, I recommend that you go check them out. He has definitely earned his "Viewers for Quality Television Awards"; unlike other TV shows out there that are filled with junk, his actually show how life in the law enforcement business is. Of course they are dramatized but they are still much better than some of the junk we are seeing around today.
