Edward Asner is considered one of the best actors to grace television since the 1950s. His acting achievements are hard to match even for persons who have been in the business longer than him.
Early Life:
Edward was born on November 15th 1929 in Kansas City, Missouri and was raised by his stay at home mother Lizzie Asner. His father was Morris David Asner who ran the family business; this was a store that sold second hand items at great deal. The Asner family were devout Jews so of course Edward was raised as one, but when it came time for him to go to school his family sent him to Wyandotte High School. After graduating from high school Edward attended the University of Chicago.
TV Career:
Mr. Asner was not one of the actors who found instant success, at first he stared in small roles on shows such as Target: The Corruptors! This was his first major television appearance and since the show only lasted for one season that aired 35 episodes there was not much chance of him appearing on this show again, but sometimes it is the little roles that get an actor's name out there. After a few more small gigs Edward finally landed a spot in the hit TV show "The Wild Wild West" like the first show he stared in this show did not last too long; it only lasted four seasons. This is mainly because television viewers were starting to get tired of those type of show and had started to watch spy shows like Mission: Impossible. Since Edward was such a great actor he worked hard on getting a role in a spy show and sure enough his hard work paid off; in 1969 he was casted for the part of George Simpson in the Mission Impossible episode "The Mind of Stefan Miklos". After staring in Mission: Impossible there was no turning back for Edward, he went on to win many awards including an Emmy Award for his role in the television mini-series Roots. In this show he played the role of Captain Davis who kidnapped slaves and sold them into slavery. Of recently Edward has acted in the television shows Studio 60 on the sunset Strip, CSI:NY, and The X-Files.
Other achievements:
Not only did Edward Asner shine on the small screen, he was also a big screen star. You may remember him from popular movies such as the Christmas Card, Christmas is Here Again, and his most recent work being his role as Carl Frederickson in the Disney/Pixar movie UP. In addition he has also lent his voice to many animated characters in TV shows and Video Games. Throughout his life Edward has shown great courage enlisting in the U.S. Army Signal Corps and even raising a child who was affected by autism.
