The Voice will start on September 10. NBC’s reality talent show will not be the only singing competition since its rival The X Factor premieres two days later – with the addition of new judges Britney Spears and Demi Lovato. So NBC decided to have a double twist - a steal and a knockout on their reality show.
On Sunday, executive producer Mark Burnett—together with coaches Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton and host Carson Daly—unveiled the double twist intended to extend the drama and maintain viewers' interest after the chairs stop spinning.
"We all just wondered, what is it that we can do during the battles to keep the competitive element going," Burnett said. Pit the judges against each other some more!
During the first two seasons, fans of the reality show saw two contestants who face off in front of their coach during the battle rounds, with the losing singer leaving the competition for good. The twist in this season enables the rival coaches to steal contestants that have been sent home. The rule is like the bling audition wherein if more than one coach hits their red buzzer, the contestant has the power to choose which coach he wants to mentor him/her. Each coach can save two contestants, which leaves them with 10 singers instead of 8.
The second element of the show, the "knockout round." Let the coaches reduce the number of their teams to five. The remaining 20 singers will then proceed to the live shows.
"It worked better than we hoped. It's been a kind experience," Burnett said. People who deserve to stay will stay." The decision to add a "steal" and a "knockout round," Burnett said, was a joint one between himself, NBC, Warner Horizon and Talpa Media (which created the show in Holland).
But will be enough to hold the interest of viewers from all over America? Last season, “The Voice” averaged about 14 million viewers. "The X Factor" averaged around 12 million viewers in its first season last fall. This season, Britney Spears and Demi Lovato generate buzz for the Fox Network talent show.
Now, Aguilera will be pitted once more with her former "Mickey Mouse Club" castmate and music chart rival. But the 31-year-old songstress sees the rivalry as a friendly competition between two friends: "I came up with Britney ... we were very close," she said. "Our paths have always crossed. They're going to continue to cross. I welcome her to this family of fun and entertainment and finding new talent. Britney's a pro."
